A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
Liebe Mitglieder – Dear Members,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your Vorstand (President) for the next two years.
I am pleased and honored to be able to give back for the many good times we have experienced together in the Delaware Sängerbund and Library Association, Inc.
It is my intent, to communicate with you in this monthly newsletter on items which in my opinion are very important and meaningful to the existence of our organization.
This month I would like to re-state the objectives toward which we should try to strive.
1. To encourage, support and perpetuate the study and use of the German language, culture, traditions, customs, dancing, and German choral singing
2. To share traditional sociability among the German community and extend it to the community at large
3. To foster a better understanding of the contributions made by the German immigrant to the American way of life
4. To promote good citizenship
These four objectives are directly out of our Constitution, and I believe that we must occasionally be reminded and returned to these objectives.
We need everyone’s help to make the Delaware Sängerbund an even better and more enjoyable place than before. You can help most by:
1. Participating in all our events, lectures and classes
2. Support your Board of Directors and Committees
3. Volunteer for things that interest you
I look forward to representing all of you in the Delaware Sängerbund and helping to make the Club your home away from home where you meet and make new friends.
Mit freundlichen Grüssen,
Richard Grieb
A THANK YOU FROM YOUR PAST PRESIDENT
I would again like to thank the membership for their support over the past four years. Leading a large organization like ours can be difficult at times, but with the dedication and support of our members, it becomes very easy. Thank you to the various committees for working together. I want to again say thank you to my daughters Allyssa, and Morgan, and to my wife Stephanie, who was always there to assist me. I look forward to the next two years as 2nd Vice President. With your support, we can continue on with the events in place, and hopefully introduce new ideas.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
Fasching - Carnival or Mardi Gras goes by many names in German, depending on the region and dialect: Karneval (Rhineland), Fasching (Austria, Bavaria), Fastnacht (Baden, Switzerland), Fosnat (Franconia) or Fasnet (Swabia). Whether it's Fasching or Karneval, it is a time to let off steam and live it up before the Lenten period that once called for fasting (die Fastenzeit). It is this fasting tradition that gave the celebration its Fastnacht name ("night before fasting"). In the 15th and 16th centuries, amusing plays known as Fastnachtspiele were performed during the pre-Lenten season. Today there are elaborate parades (Umzüge) in all the large and small communities where Fasching is celebrated. Floats and marchers displaying large caricature heads often lampoon regional and national politicians. Another part of the celebration involves Carnival royalty (princes, princesses) and a sort of "counter-government" during the season. The Rhineland Rosenmontagumzug is an event broadcast each year on German television, similar to the Macy's Thanksgiving parade in New York. It features colorful floats with caricatured figures mocking local and national politicians and other personalities or events.
Fasching, Saturday February 17th
Our Masked Ball, is held on the last Saturday before lent. The Jacob Titz Orchestra will play from 7:00pm to 11:00p.m. The doors open at 6:30p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Tickets will go on sale Monday, January 29th from 7:30pm until 9:00pm in the Bauernstube. Tickets will then be available every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30pm until 9:00pm. Tickets are $7.00 each and will also be available at the door. Reservations can also be made by phone (302)-453-8557, or by email to brianofdsb@aol.com.
The Delaware Sängerbund 154th Stiftungsfest, Saturday March 17th
