A Message from your president
Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members),
Per our constitution I have prepared a program and course of action for the upcoming year which will further the aims of the Organization. I have submitted these goals to the Board of Directors and have gotten unanimous agreement from them. The following are the goals I would like to attempt and with your support we can achieve:
1. Start a weekly German School for our children. This school would meet once a week for 2 – 3 hours during the school year.
We would start this school after the summer break with one class. It would be called the 1st Grade, however children of all ages could attend.
These young people would be moved up to the Second Grade in a one to two year time frame and a new 1st grade would be formed, etc.
The German School would come under the jurisdiction of the Cultural Committee and staffed with teachers, hopefully from within the Delaware Saengerbund membership. There are numerous children in our club that would benefit from this program. We have many young people who are children or grandchildren of Club Members as evident by the numbers that attend the Christmas as well as Easter events.
2. Establish a German speaking day in the Bauernstube. On that particular day, everyone would make a best effort attempt to converse in German, especially when ordering from the bar. The target day for this would be Friday, since it seems like most German speaking people gather in the Bauernstube on Friday evenings. I would encourage anyone who speaks the language to help others that are struggling.
3. Start a German Band in our organization that would play occasionally for dances in the Deutsche Halle, picnics or in the Bauernstube. We have many talented musicians in our club and at least some of them have expressed an interest to me to get together and play for others, as well as having a good time themselves.
I have no name at this time for someone in charge of this group however, if any of our members would like to volunteer, just see me. The goal for the group would be to make their 1st public appearance before the end of this year.
4. Have at least one dinner per month. The Ladies and Dancers have done the bulk of the dinners served however, we have other subgroups that must step forward to achieve that goal.
5. Encourage all groups to make a special effort to keep the objectives of our constitution in mind when laying out their program every year.
6. Visit and communicate with other German Clubs in the area and invite them to visit us.
The above are certainly achievable goals and in line with our desired objectives. I encourage every one of our members to read these goals carefully, understand them or ask questions, and then fully support this effort.
The Delaware Saengerbund and all its members will benefit and enjoy this return to basics.
Mit freundlichen Grüssen,
Richard Grieb

GERMAN GENEALOGY GROUP
The Genealogy Group will meet on Monday, Feb. 26th at 7:30 in the Deutsche Halle.
As one way of studying the social history of our ancestors we will have the privilege of hearing about daily life in Europe from two of our club leaders who grew to adulthood in Europe before immigrating to America. These stories are very personal, yet speaks to each of us. In January, we were blessed with the stories of Richard Grieb and Simon Schock.
This month our speakers will be two very important women to the club members:
Helga Kissell and Annemarie McNeal
The March meeting will be brief presentations by our members of stories or resource materials in pursuit of our ancestors.
WE URGE YOU TO ATTEND both the Feb. meeting and the April meeting. They are open to all members.
On April 30, our DSB genealogy meeting will have a world renowned author and publisher, Corrine Earnest, speak on Pennsylvania Germans and Frakturs. She and her husband own and operate the Russell D. Earnest Associates Publishing Company. Please put April 30 on your calendars and help us welcome Corrine to the Delaware Saengerbund.

CULTURE COMMITTEE NEWS
CONVERSATION CIRCLE – There is interest in forming a conversation circle for members wishing to speak more and only German. Lorena Meunier will serve as liaison under the Culture Committee. The date for the first meeting for interested members will be Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30pm in the library. This is another great opportunity to keep your oral skills alive and to interact on a variety of topics. If you have questions, please contact Trudy Gilgenast, Trudyg@udel.edu or 302-995-1726.
CHANGE OF DATE - DEUTSCH FÜR KINDER CAMP – Due to a conflict, the date of the summer Deutsch für Kinder Camp will be held July 16-27, 2007. The age range is from 6-10 years and is open to members’ children and grandchildren. The two week camp will be held from 9:00 – 12:00 Monday – Friday for a total cost of $20.00 per child. Dr. Iris Busch and daughter Stefanie will again offer an interesting and fun program so that your child will be singing and speaking German at the end of camp. Contact Dr. Busch at beuren@udel.edu or 302-453-9872, if you have questions. Registration forms will follow in a future newsletter.
LIBRARY GIFT – THE MIDNIGHT KNOCK ON THE DOOR, written 1977-1980 by Elita Koch Witt, is a fascinating autobiographical account of her life in the Ukraine from 1929-1945.
Leon Witt, whose wife Elita passed away in 1994, presented this book, published in 2006, to the Culture Committee for our DSB library. Members may borrow this gift and read about the hardships this woman endured under Stalin’s forced and ruthless land reforms in the Ukraine. Elita’s grandparents were landowners; her father was a veterinarian; however life was filled with fear and danger. Unable to endure the misery any longer, she and her family were able to escape and seek refuge in Germany. It was in Bavaria where she then met and married Leon who was stationed there in the U. S. Army. The book was written as a personal memoir to her children and grandchildren.
This book is an interesting supplement to the talks of our members presented through the genealogical group’s program. Members who came as immigrants to the United States describe their life abroad and their reasons for coming to this country.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
The next Communications Committee meeting will be held Friday, March 9th at 6:30pm in the Board room. Anyone interested in promoting our club, in any fashion, is invited to attend.
