A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members):
The German Language Classes at the Delaware Sängerbund are getting close to reality. We have enough interest to start with three age groups:
4 – 6 years old
7 – 10 years old
11 – 17 years old
Three certified teachers have tentatively agreed to teach our students, with the basic criteria of being qualified for the specific age groups. The parents/grandparents of interested students have selected Sunday afternoon from 2 – 3:30pm as the most convenient day and time, with a starting date of October 14, 2007.
Now it is up to you! Where else can you take your children/grandchildren to learn German, have fun and make new friends at no cost to you but in the Delaware Sängerbund? This is the opportunity of a life-time. If you have children in the above age groups, talk to them and give them the opportunity to have an advantage over their classmates and an experience they won’t forget.
Some reasons of why it is a good idea to peruse of this opportunity and have your children participate:
“Die Deutsche Schule im Delaware Sängerbund” will give them this opportunity. Sign up – it’s free and fun.
Mit freundlichen Grüssen,
Richard Grieb

DEUTSCHE SCHULE IM DELAWARE SAENGERBUND
Plans for a Deutsche Schule im Delaware Saengerbund have been finalized and are ready for members’ active participation. Parents who responded to the questionnaire selected Sunday as the best day for instruction in German language, culture, customs. As of now there will be three age levels of instruction: 4-6, 7-10, 11-17. Each class will be instructed by a teacher with a volunteer aide (parent) to assist. We would appreciate it if some parents would sign up on a monthly volunteer basis. As this is a benefit of membership, there is no tuition; however, to insure commitment we request that each family make a deposit of $50.00 which will be returned at the end if the students attend 80% (17+) class meetings. Parents are asked to purchase any books, as the students will keep them.
Classes will be held FROM 2:00 – 3:30PM EVERY SUNDAY BEGINNING OCTOBER 14 THROUGH THE END OF APRIL. (Some dates may conflict with a holiday and instruction will be determined at that time.)
Fill out and submit the registration form to enroll your child(ren) in our Deutsche Schule. Submit a $50.00 check made out to DSB and send registration with check to Attn: Culture Committee/DSB. If you have questions, contact Trudy Gilgenast at 302-995-1726; TrudyG@udel.edu or President Grieb at 610-388-1447. Registration deadline: September 15, 2007.

GERMAN-AMERICAN HISTORY
FREDERICK WEYERHAEUSER
Frederick Weyerhaeuser, born in 1834 Niedersaulheim, RheinHesse, came to America in 1852 as a penniless youth and went on to become known as the Timber King, a title for he cared very little. He remained throughout his life a simple man who shied away from publicity. Who's Who in America only discovered him in 1911, three years before his death. He enjoyed his anonymity, as did his descendants.
After coming to America, he worked as a day laborer in the vicinity of Erie, Pennsylvania, where he married Elisabeth Bladel. He then moved to Rock Island, Illinois, where he worked on a railroad and as a carter.
He advanced quickly where he worked. In one of the few interviews he ever gave, when asked to explain the reasons for his tremendous success, he said, "The secret lay simply in my will to work. I never watched the clock and never stopped before I had finished what I was working on."
He put his sentiment to great effect. In Rock Island he was put in charge of a sawmill and then a timber yard. After the panic of 1857 he was able to buy both with money he had saved. Soon afterwards, he bought logs from the shores of the Mississippi and acquired additional saw mills.
In the year 1864, Weyerhaeuser began to buy up pine tracts in Wisconsin, after which he had all stages of the lumber business under his control. He acquired still more land in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. In 1891, he moved to St. Paul where he became friends and neighbors with James J. Hill, the operator of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Hill had acquired millions of acres of the best timber forests cheaply from the government for his railroad. He knew nothing about the lumber business, and sold more than three million acres of forests to Weyerhaeuser at bargain rates, contributing much to the wealth of the company.
At the turn of the century, he owned more timberland than other American did. He held rather liberal views, considering the period, and showed greater concern for his workers than any other industrial magnate of the time. He impressed upon them the necessity of protecting even the smallest trees. Upon his death in 1914, Hill commented, "His place can never be filled...He was one of those national forces that helped build our country..."
Today the Weyerhaeser Corporation is a multi-million dollar company with offices in Europe and Canada, with their Headquarter in Washington, near Seattle. There is also a Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, founded in 1948. Since then the foundation has directed over $100 million to worthy causes.
