A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members):

In order to make it easier for you to communicate with your D.S.B. Board Members and Chairperson’s of certain committees we have installed a telephone answering system that will put you in touch with key people and mailboxes for these individuals directly.  The mailboxes are private and can only be accessed by the person assigned to that specific box number.

To leave a message for anyone assigned to a mailbox, simply call the D.S.B. main telephone number 302-366-9954 and listen to the prompts.  If you know the person’s mailbox number you may press that number at anytime and bypass the individual prompts.

If you call during a time when the club is open and you get a live person to answer, just ask that person to hang up and not answer the phone when you call back.  Then call the main telephone number again and listen to the options described to you to leave a message.

The individual assigned mailbox numbers are listed below.  Please leave a message and you should receive a return call within a reasonable time period.

OKTOBERFEST 2007

September 14, 15, 16th

The Oberkrainer Power, an upcoming group from Austria making its inaugural tour of the United States, will be the featured band on Friday, Saturday evening and Sunday. The ever popular JT Orchestra will play Saturday afternoon. Our own Enzian Volkstanzgruppe will perform Bavarian dances throughout the weekend.

The opening ceremony will take place on Friday at 7 pm and will conclude with our President Richard Grieb tapping the ceremonial Paulaner keg.

Paulaner Oktoberfest and Paulaner Hefe-Weizen from Munich will be the official import draft beers. They will be joined by the domestic beers of German heritage Yuengling and Coors. By popular demand, the authentic Paulaner one liter and the weissbier glasses will be available for purchase again this year. A limited number of Yuengling’s new one liter glasses will also be offered.

As an early bird incentive, pig roast dinners, including roast pork and the club’s signature potato salad and sauerkraut, will be offered on Saturday afternoon and also on Sunday. The regular menu will be served through the weekend.

Word is out that we have the most authentic Oktoberfest west of Munich. Make sure that your friends and family do not miss out this year! Please remind them to come early.

Advance Purchase Tickets will be sold to members only at the August and September general membership meetings. The price is a discounted $5. Gate admission is $6.

Volunteers – You must wear the proper Wristband in order to get into the event grounds and the building.  Families will get a Parking pass for the shift they are working.  Remember parking is tight late Saturday afternoon, and when it rains.  Get both Wristband and Parking Pass from your chairman before the weekend.

OKTOBERFEST 2007

Sept 14, 15, 16th

Volunteers are the life blood of Oktoberfest.   We encourage all members to participate.  The rewards are great for yourself while you make new friends, become a part of the biggest event of the year and help make DSB’S Oktoberfest the most special German event of the year on the East Coast.

All the chairs are listed on the following page.  Call them to offer your help.  Many are already fully staffed, but the following areas are still in need as of mid-August.  What would our Oktoberfest be without potato salad and sauerkraut, grilled wursts and people to serve our guests?  Please help in these critical areas:

Food Preparation in the kitchen Tuesday - Sunday

       Sauerkraut starts Tuesday

       Potatoes start early Friday morning

       Chicken starts Friday afternoon

              Each continues all week-end

Taking Food to the food lines - Sunday

Run the Food Line cash register - Friday and Saturday

Dishwashing – Friday and Sunday

Soda/Hot Dog Stand - Friday, Saturday and Sunday

CULTURE COMMITTEE NEWS

·         KINDER CAMP- 2007

CONGRATULATIONS to Iris and Stefanie Busch for directing another successful Deutsch für Kinder Camp.  Participants learned German by engaging in Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer, an imaginary tour through Germany and by singing Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust.

A variety of camp projects and activities culminated in the ‘grand finale’ skit that was delightful and fun.  With great enthusiasm the children demonstrated their new skills by singing and describing travel, cities, weather and weekdays – in perfect German!  Indeed they showed the audience that DEUTSCH MACHT SPASS!

·         ERNTEDANKFEST  2007

“Nun danket alle Gott” – Erntedankfest, the annual German-American Thanksgiving Service, will be held on Sunday, October 7th at 3:00p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 2101 Lancaster Ave  in Wilmington.     Zion was established in 1848 as the first German Lutheran Church in Delaware.

The Reverend Dr. Gregory Johnson of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.  The Johannes Brass, organist Brian Gilmore, and the chorus of the Delaware Saengerbund under the direction of Dr. C. Nelson Fritts will provide the festive music.

The Germans traditionally celebrate the first Sunday in October as their day of thanksgiving.  Members are invited to attend this special service after which everyone is invited to a light supper at the club.

·         KONVERSATIONSRUNDE

A conversation circle for members wishing to speak more and only German will resume in October.  This program will follow the schedule of the German classes and will be held from October through May.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CIRCLE WILL MEET ON THE THIRD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH!  Lorena Meunier serves as facilitator of this group which meets at 7:30pm in the library.  For questions, however, contact Trudy Gilgenast, 302-995-1726 or Trudyg@udel.edu.

Single Supplement - $600

Nov 15, 2007      $450 – deposit

Jan 31, 2008       $1,000

Mar 12, 2008       final payment

Join Saengerbund members who have traveled together in the past and who are anxious to undertake another exciting adventure in touring German highlights.  The Culture Committee presents this wonderful itinerary.

Discover Germany’s little known gems, taste the culinary delights and enjoy highlights of German culture and traditions.  An exciting two week tour includes Bremen and Bremerhaven, with a visit to the Emigration Museum , a must for the genealogical buff doing family research.  A three night stay in Berlin affords personal  time to tour the many outstanding museums or a side visit to Potsdam.  After a stop in Leipzig which offers a visit to the Thomaskirche where J.S. Bach worked and Luther preached, the tour continues on to two nights in Dresden.  This city on the Elbe River showcases the Zwinger Palace; Green Vault, August the Strong’s famous treasury; Semper Opera and the rebuilt Frauenkirche.  We continue the drive to Freiberg on the Silver Street and Seiffen, the Christmas craft capital, where we can do our shopping for the holiday.  After a two night stay there the tour spends a night in Coburg, noted for the Veste, the fortress where Luther hid during the Augsburg Confession.  The final three nights will be at the Platzl hotel in Munich.  This city known as the ‘secret capital’ offers many gems for the visitor to discover and enjoy.

Members and friends interested in obtaining a flyer and/or signing up for this tour may contact My World Travel and  tour director, John Maiorano (610-358-3744, 302-655-4770, 1-800-822-0922) or Trudy Gilgenast (302-995-1726, TrudyG@udel.edu)

German Genealogy Group

·         Beginning Genealogy 101

The opening meeting of the German Genealogy Group will take place on Monday, September 24th at 7:30 pm in the Board Room. All members are welcome.  We will start our program year with a basic introduction to Genealogy. This would be of value for:

*        Those who have never done any research.

*        Those who want to refresh their understanding of the processes.

*        Those who want to learn other processes that may help them find that elusive ancestor.

*        Those with experience who can share their successful searches for ancestors.

It will be led by our own DSB member, Louise Kirkpatrick who is an active volunteer at the LDS library and has a lot of experience helping people look for their personal histories.  The discussion will include:

*        What do you know?

*        What do you need to know?

*        How to fill the holes

*        Using the internet

DEUTSCHE SCHULE IM DELAWARE SAENGERBUND

Plans for a Deutsche Schule im Delaware Saengerbund have been finalized and are ready for members’ active participation.  Parents who responded to the questionnaire selected Sunday as the best day for instruction in German language, culture, and customs.  As of now there will be three age levels of instruction: 4-6, 7-10, 11-17.  Each class will be instructed by a teacher with a volunteer aide (parent) to assist.  We would appreciate it if some parents would sign up on a monthly volunteer basis.  As this is a benefit of membership, there is no tuition; however, to insure commitment we request that each family make a deposit of $50.00 which will be returned at the end if the students attend 80% (17+) class meetings.  Parents are asked to purchase any books, as the students will keep them.

Classes will be held FROM 2:00 – 3:30PM EVERY SUNDAY BEGINNING OCTOBER 14 THROUGH THE END OF APRIL.  (Some dates may conflict with a holiday and instruction will be determined at that time.)

Fill out and submit the registration form to enroll your child(ren) in our Deutsche Schule. Submit a $50.00 check made out to DSB and send registration with check to Attn: Culture Committee/DSB. If you have questions, contact Trudy Gilgenast at 302-995-1726; TrudyG@udel.edu  or President Grieb at 610-388-1447.  Registration deadline:  September 15, 2007.
