PROPERTY COMMITTEE

There will be a Property Committee meeting Monday, October 1st at 7:30 pm.

Athletic Field: Work is proceeding to engage an engineer to prepare drawings and specifications to (1) secure permits from New Castle County and, (2) select a contractor to begin grading and soil improvement work on the athletic field south of the garage and picnic pavilion.

Property Cleanup:  Thanks to the many DSB Members who came out September 8th to clean up our property to make it more attractive to members and guests expected during Oktoberfest weekend.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members):

I would like to thank the members who have volunteered to help beautify our club facilities by helping with the clean-up, painting of the Deutsche Halle, cleaning and polishing the paneling, painting the outside wall of the library, the Von Steuben room and any other project that was done.  Look around you can see the difference.

There are several other areas that need similar attention; cleaning and painting the front entrance hall, the first impression visitors get of our club facilities as well as painting the back hallway, cleaning and painting the Bauernstube and Weinstube.

Some of our special interest groups had been asked to volunteer and agreed to take on some of these tasks. Hopefully they will honor their word.  However, many of you are not part of a special interest group – you are just loyal members.   I am asking you as well to join us in making our clubhouse the best that it can be!  Please volunteer to help.  See Fred Escheu or myself, we will obtain all the supplies you need.  Take ownership of your club.  Be proud of the fact that you did your part and tell others about your accomplishment. Remember, working together will be for the good of the Delaware Saengerbund.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen,

Richard Grieb

CULTURE COMMITTEE NEWS

·         ERNTEDANKFEST  2007

“Nun danket alle Gott” – Erntedankfest, the annual German-American Thanksgiving Service, will be held on Sunday, October 7th at 3:00p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 2101 Lancaster Ave  in Wilmington.     Zion was established in 1848 as the first German Lutheran Church in Delaware.

The Reverend Dr. Gregory Johnson of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.  The Johannes Brass, organist Brian Gilmore, and the chorus of the Delaware Saengerbund under the direction of Dr. C. Nelson Fritts will provide the festive music.

The Germans traditionally celebrate the first Sunday in October as their day of thanksgiving.  Members are invited to attend this special service after which everyone is invited to a light supper at the club.

·         LANGUAGE CLASSES

Kommt und lernt Deutsch!   Come on and learn some German!

A special privilege of your DSB membership is the opportunity to enroll in one of two German language courses offered.  So, come on and enroll in the fall classes.  PLEASE NOTE THAT CLASSES ARE HELD FROM 7:30 – 9:00PM. Elementary German begins on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 and intermediate German on Thursday, October 4, 2007.  Instruction continues weekly from October through May.

The beginner’s class is taught by Helga Kissell and meets in the von Steuben Room.  You will learn the basic skills along with culture, dialogs, readings.    The intermediate course is taught by Elisabeth Kottenhahn and meets in the library.  For members who have the basic language skills, you have a chance to review , to read short stories, articles and to awaken latent skills.

If you decide to enroll, attend the first class on the designated date.  Should you have questions, contact the Language Coordinator, Trudy Gilgenast at 995-1726 or Trudyg@udel.edu.

·         KONVERSATIONSRUNDE

A conversation circle for members wishing to speak more and only German will resumes this month.  This program will follow the schedule of the German classes and will be held from October through May.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CIRCLE WILL MEET ON THE THIRD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH (October 16th)!  Lorena Meunier serves as facilitator of this group which meets at 7:30pm in the library.  For questions, however, contact Trudy Gilgenast, 302-995-1726 or Trudyg@udel.edu.

Join Saengerbund members who have traveled together in the past and who are anxious to undertake another exciting adventure in touring German highlights.  The Culture Committee presents this wonderful itinerary.

Discover Germany’s little known gems, taste the culinary delights and enjoy highlights of German culture and traditions.  An exciting two week tour includes Bremen and Bremerhaven, with a visit to the Emigration Museum, a must for the genealogical buff doing family research.  A three night stay in Berlin affords personal time to tour the many outstanding museums or a side visit to Potsdam.  After a stop in Leipzig which offers a visit to the Thomaskirche where J.S. Bach worked and Luther preached, the tour continues on to two nights in Dresden.  This city on the Elbe River showcases the Zwinger Palace; Green Vault, August the Strong’s famous treasury; Semper Opera and the rebuilt Frauenkirche.  We continue the drive to Freiberg on the Silver Street and Seiffen, the Christmas craft capital, where we can do our shopping for the holiday.  After a two night stay there the tour spends a night in Coburg, noted for the Veste, the fortress where Luther hid during the Augsburg Confession.  The final three nights will be at the Platzl hotel in Munich.  This city known as the ‘secret capital’ offers many gems for the visitor to discover and enjoy.

Members and friends interested in obtaining a flyer and/or signing up for this tour may contact My World Travel and  tour director, John Maiorano (610-358-3744, 302-655-4770, 1-800-822-0922) or Trudy Gilgenast (302-995-1726, TrudyG@udel.edu)

·         CONCORDIA GERMAN LANGUAGE CAMP – SUMMER 2008

The DSB awards two stipends valued at $2,000 each to members’ children or grandchildren to attend the Concordia German Language Camp in Minnesota next summer.  Students between the ages of 8-18 are eligible to apply.  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn German while having fun too.  Although this is a total immersion environment (everything in German!), no prior German study is needed. Complete applications and letters are due by November 29, 2007 to the Culture Committee of the DSB.

EVTG SUNDAY DINNER

The EVTG will be hosting a dinner on Sunday, November 18th in the Deutsche Halle.  More information to come.

DEUTSCHE SCHULE IM DELAWARE SAENGERBUND

Plans for a Deutsche Schule im Delaware Saengerbund have been finalized and are ready for members’ active participation.  Parents who responded to the questionnaire selected Sunday as the best day for instruction in German language, culture, and customs.  As of now there will be three age levels of instruction: 4-6, 7-10, 11-17.  Each class will be instructed by a teacher with a volunteer aide (parent) to assist.  We would appreciate it if some parents would sign up on a monthly volunteer basis.  As this is a benefit of membership, there is no tuition; however, to insure commitment we request that each family make a deposit of $50.00 which will be returned at the end if the students attend 80% (17+) class meetings.  Parents are asked to purchase any books, as the students will keep them.

Classes will be held FROM 2:00 – 3:30PM EVERY SUNDAY BEGINNING OCTOBER 14 THROUGH THE END OF APRIL.  (Some dates may conflict with a holiday and instruction will be determined at that time.)

Fill out and submit the registration form to enroll your child(ren) in our Deutsche Schule. Submit a $50.00 check made out to DSB and send registration with check to Attn: Culture Committee/DSB. If you have questions, contact Trudy Gilgenast at 302-995-1726; TrudyG@udel.edu  or President Grieb at 610-388-1447.  Registration deadline:  September 15, 2007.

FROM THE LADIES OF THE DSB

The Ladies are now in full swing planning for the German Christmas Festival on Saturday, November 10th from 11 am to 5 pm.  We will have a sign up sheet included in the newsletter, and as well as a table at the entrance of the general membership meetings with sign up sheets to ask for your help and donations for cakes, etc. The Ladies will no longer be calling the members to ask for volunteers and donations so we are hopeful that you may be able to help the Ladies in the preparations, donations, or during the event. We are always grateful to all those who volunteer and the Ladies could not hold the Bazaar without the help from so many other DSB members.

The Ladies are now accepting donations for the Christmas Bazaar’s white elephant sale.  You may place donated items in the long hall outside the kitchen (please label them as for the Bazaar).  We also hope that you will remember that we would like items for the Santa’s Secret Christmas Shoppe where the little one’s can shop for mom and dad and other family members.  The purchases can be wrapped at the shop.  If you can donate jewelry gift boxes, wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, we’ll make good use of that also.

If you are a member who would like to volunteer your help with the Bazaar, please contact Bettie Hopkins at 563-5885 or via email at bett381@hotmail.com.  Preparations for the Bazaar begin well in advance of the event and honestly it is enjoyable work.

The next Ladies meetings will be held Monday, September 24th and Monday October 29th at 7:30 pm in the Von Steuben room. So join us for the meeting and stay for some great fun!

We always welcome new members to join us!

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Items for consideration in next month’s newsletter are due on the date of the next DSB monthly meeting (October 8th at the General Membership meeting).  The next newsletter will contain items/events for November, December, January, and beyond.

If you see an omission, typographical or editing error for an item you submitted, please let me know immediately by Email.  Thank you for your on-going support - Rick Malley, Communications Secretary, Email: RickofDSB@DelawareSaengerbund.org.
