OKTOBERFEST 2007

Oktoberfest 2007 was a memorable success with 18,500 guests feasting on record quantities of food and drink under nearly perfect weather. Although the attendance was not a record, the financial results are substantially above the previous marks.

Pictures of this year’s Oktoberfest may be found on the club’s website and also on the site of this year’s band, the Oberkrainer Power.

We wish to thank the more than 500 volunteers, members, friends, soccer families and University of Delaware students, for their devoted service that was essential to the successful outcome.

The Appreciation Party will be held on Saturday November 3rd with the doors open at 5:30 pm. Attendance is open to all who worked during Oktoberfest. A worker may bring a spouse or a guest. Reservations are unnecessary.

Thank You Very Much,

Sam Kalb, Jr., Lloyd Maier, Hans Nafzinger and Carl Renner

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Danke schön – Thank you, for another very successful Oktoberfest.  It is a pleasure to be the head of such a great organization and so many wonderful members.

I can’t tell you how proud I was of all of you who worked tirelessly with so much enthusiasm and always smiles on your faces.  Our success was not only financial, but social as well. I’m sure all of you must have met at least one of our members whom you did not know before or hardly knew, and became to know them better because of the Oktoberfest.

We made friends in our community by being who we are.  I have heard nothing but praise from our members as well as our visitors.  It is amazing what can be accomplished when members work together including members who recently said they were “too old” to do things, carry their full load.  This Fest showed us once again that all of our members are equally important.

Thank you again, and let us continue on working together for many years to come.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen,

Richard Grieb

FROM THE LADIES OF THE DSB

The Ladies are now in full swing planning for the German Christmas Festival on Saturday, November 10th from 11 am to 5 pm.  We will have a sign up sheet included in the newsletter, and as well as a table at the entrance of the general membership meetings with sign up sheets to ask for your help and donations for cakes, etc. The Ladies will no longer be calling the members to ask for volunteers and donations so we are hopeful that you may be able to help the Ladies in the preparations, donations, or during the event. We are always grateful to all those who volunteer and the Ladies could not hold the Bazaar without the help from so many other DSB members.

The Ladies are now accepting donations for the Christmas Bazaar’s white elephant sale.  You may place donated items in the long hall outside the kitchen (please label them as for the Bazaar).  We also hope that you will remember that we would like items for the Santa’s Secret Christmas Shoppe where the little one’s can shop for mom and dad and other family members.  The purchases can be wrapped at the shop.  If you can donate jewelry gift boxes, wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, we’ll make good use of that also.

If you are a member who would like to volunteer your help with the Bazaar, please contact Bettie Hopkins at 563-5885 or via email at bett381@hotmail.com.  Preparations for the Bazaar begin well in advance of the event and honestly it is enjoyable work.

The next Ladies meetings will be held Monday, October 29th at 7:30 pm in the Von Steuben room. So join us for the meeting and stay for some great fun!

We always welcome new members to join us!

Join Saengerbund members who have traveled together in the past and who are anxious to undertake another exciting adventure in touring German highlights.  The Culture Committee presents this wonderful itinerary.

Discover Germany’s little known gems, taste the culinary delights and enjoy highlights of German culture and traditions.  An exciting two week tour includes Bremen and Bremerhaven, with a visit to the Emigration Museum, a must for the genealogical buff doing family research.  A three night stay in Berlin affords personal time to tour the many outstanding museums or a side visit to Potsdam.  After a stop in Leipzig which offers a visit to the Thomaskirche where J.S. Bach worked and Luther preached, the tour continues on to two nights in Dresden.  This city on the Elbe River showcases the Zwinger Palace; Green Vault, August the Strong’s famous treasury; Semper Opera and the rebuilt Frauenkirche.  We continue the drive to Freiberg on the Silver Street and Seiffen, the Christmas craft capital, where we can do our shopping for the holiday.  After a two night stay there the tour spends a night in Coburg, noted for the Veste, the fortress where Luther hid during the Augsburg Confession.  The final three nights will be at the Platzl hotel in Munich.  This city known as the ‘secret capital’ offers many gems for the visitor to discover and enjoy.

Members and friends interested in obtaining a flyer and/or signing up for this tour may contact My World Travel and  tour director, John Maiorano (610-358-3744, 302-655-4770, 1-800-822-0922) or Trudy Gilgenast (302-995-1726, TrudyG@udel.edu)

The DSB awards two stipends valued at $2,000 each to members’ children or grandchildren to attend the Concordia German Language Camp in Minnesota next summer.  Students between the ages of 8-18 are eligible to apply.  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn German while having fun too.  Although this is a total immersion environment (everything in German!), no prior German study is needed.
