NEW IN THE LIBRARY --- DAS ECHOLOT

Walter Kempowski’s acclaimed chronicle of World War II, DAS ECHOLOT, is now available for sign out in our library. The ten volumes are a collage of contemporary notes, songs, diaries, documents and quotations, collected by Kempowski over a long period of time. The result presents one of the most gripping and original chronicles of the war years from 1941 – 1945.  The text is in German. To sign out any of the 10 volumes, please contact Andy Olivier, 302-368-0330.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members):

As required by our constitution, and planning for the year ahead, let me share with you the plan of action the Board of Directors envisions this club to take in 2008.

In the January meeting I pointed out some of the achievements we accomplished in 2007.  Many of them were ambitious goals, but with the help of all our members we had a very successful year.

Now on to 2008:

All permanent committees have performed well and therefore they will stay without any major changes.  All chairpersons have indicated they will continue to serve in their current positions.  I will appoint temporary committees as required.

We must continue doing the things that went well and change items that need improving.  Our goals to make 2008 even more successful are as follows:

1.                  Improve Member participation. Whether it is a painting project, clean-up of the grounds, or participating in scheduled events, we will only be successful if everyone participates.  The attendance in Deutsche Halle events has dwindled and can only be continued if you support them.

2.                  The improvement of the athletic field has begun and will continue with a final determination of recommendations anticipated early this Spring.

3.                  We will continue pursuing the purchase of the property at 67 Salem Church Road.

4.                  The Property Committee is recommending the installation of a new roof on both the rental properties at 49 and 63 Salem Church Road.

5.                  We will make it more convenient for some of our senior citizens to come and visit the D.S.B. by reserving parking in the first row of the parking lot (closest proximity to the front door) for people not necessarily handicapped, but in need of a little special consideration.  We are looking for some self- policing and would expect that the elderly would be honored in this endeavor.

6.                  The Deutsche Schule im Delaware Sängerbund is a success and must be continued.  A survey will be taken to see how many children would be interested in attending Summer Camp at the D.S.B. as to not have a large time gap in learning.  More to come on this.

7.                  Last but not least, let us show our pride and strength and become better known in our community as well as the German Community by participating in the upcoming Newark 250th Anniversary Parade on April 12, 2008 and in the 2008 Steuben Parade scheduled for September in Philadelphia,
