PROPERTY COMMITTEE

We are asking for DSB members to please help clean up the grounds and plantings on Saturday, April 19th, starting at 8:00 AM. Every year, following the departure of Old Man Winter, DSB members traditionally celebrate by joining together to collect trash along the property lines, pickup tree limbs, prune shrubs, rake debris, clean and mulch gardens, plant flowers and put the lawnmowers to work. Please bring work gloves, shears, saws and garden tools. Member initiative, self-direction and skills are always appreciated. This is a team effort to make the club grounds presentable. Lunch and liquid refreshment will be on hand. If heavy showers prevail, the rain date will be April 26th.

DEUTSCHE SCHULE CELEBRATION

The end of year celebration of the Deutsche Schule will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday,

April 20, in the Deutsche Halle. Parents, family, friends and all club members are invited to attend. Each teacher and class will make a presentation of German learned this year. Certificates will be presented to all students followed by a reception with light refreshments.  Students will have class at 2:00 pm and are encouraged to wear their Deutsche Schule shirts!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Liebe Mitglieder (Dear Members),

The City of Newark, Delaware will celebrate its’ 250th Anniversary on Saturday, April 12, 2008.  Mayor Vance A. Funk, III of Newark, who always attends our Oktoberfest, sent us an invitation to help celebrate their anniversary by participating in Newark’s 250th Anniversary Parade.

I believe we, the Delaware Saengerbund, being part of the City of Newark, should participate fully, representing the German Community.  I am asking every one of our members, if you are able to participate, be part of this exciting day.

We have formed a parade committee and Sam Kalb, Jr. volunteered to be chairperson.  We only have one month to put it all together.  We are therefore asking the chair of each subgroup of our club to notify their members and encourage them to participate.

We will have a float representing the D.S.B. ---- maybe?   We will march as a group with our flags leading us; however, each subgroup will participate as a separate unit.  I envision several hundred persons of the Delaware Saengerbund marching as members and proud to be German-Americans.

It has been quite a long time since we showed our strength and unity in a public display, and I hope all of you are as enthusiastic as I am to show the City of Newark that we are part of the community and are prideful to be located in this great City.

Since this newsletter is going to reach you quite late, we are going to rely on the Internet and “word of mouth” to pass important information on.  Peruse the D.S.B. website, call the chairperson of your subgroup or call the Club for any additional information.

The information to date as follows:

            1.         Date of Parade: April 12, 2008

2.                  Time:  *Assemble at the D.S.B. parking lot no later than 1:00 pm or

if you provide your own transportation, assemble at the Newark High School Parking Lot no later than 2:00 pm

3.                  Parade start time:  3 pm

4.                  Return to the D.S.B. for some refreshments after the completion of the parade

I envision the Singers, Dancers, Ladies, TAG, Soccer Teams, Deutsche Schule, Culture Committee, Genealogy Group and all our committed members to participate.

Parades and flags are a symbol of unity and strength.  Let us show the City of Newark that we are united and strong.

Mit freundlichen Grüssen,

Richard Grieb

*We anticipate having shuttle buses to transport us to Newark and return to the D.S.B.
