Starter Group (5-7 Years, exceptions for younger pupils possible)

Welcome to the Starter Group! Here, you will find information about the 2013-14 academic year, the syllabus, homework, classroom rules and materials, and other current information.

Syllabus

The syllabus is based on Langenscheidt's Meine Freunde und ich series. This book was designed for kindergarden and preschool pupils that learn German as a second language. Its 7 Chapters provide a richness and variety of topics, which makes it suitable as a teachers guide for the varying age ranges in the starter class. It provides materials for beginners and seasoned pupils. In addition, the syllabus contains topics that will familiarize the pupils with German traditions and customs around holidays and special events.

Class Materials

Each pupil is expected to bring a folder, which should allow them to collect their art work and the materials that the teacher discusses and distributes in class. This will allow the parents to monitor the pupils activities in class and their progress in the German language. There is currently no book that the children use regularly. For children, who just joined the class, we have CDs of the Langenscheidt's Meine Freunde und ich series, covering a variety of songs at a cost of $6.

Rotating Snack Schedule

Our snack schedules (click link or scroll below) are generally appreciated by students as a welcome break and refreshment. Every student takes turns every once in a while and provides a snack for the whole class. Because choosing a snack is up to the students and their parents, the choice of snack is usually a surprise and may occasionally involve traditional German goodies. For example, Lebkuchen contain almonds, which may or may not have been processed in a facility that also processes peanuts. For these reasons, we do not want to limit the choices and ask parents that you inform us in case your child has food allergies. In this case, we would ask you to provide the appropriate food for your child. In this case, of course, you would not be asked to take part in the snack schedule rotation.

Syllabus (Parents are invited to use the syllabus to practise with their children at home. Furthermore, please check out the resources section in the Dt. Schule webpage, which contains f.i. software and other materials that can be useful in studying a new language).
